Stroke

A stroke is not a heart attack. Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is suddenly interrupted or blocked. It can happen to anyone regardless of age and gender, and they can cause permanent or temporary disability where some can even be fatal.

Signs of stroke include dizziness, numbness, and loss of vision. Seek immediate emergency medical treatment at the first sight of symptoms to improve the chances of successful rehabilitation and survival. The FAST test is an easy way to recognise and remember the most common signs of stroke. Remember to act FAST.

Underlaying medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol increase the risks of stroke. Lifestyle factors associated with stroke risk factors include cigarette smoking, consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, a diet high in salt and fat, being overweight or obese, and the lack of exercise.

Speak with your doctor if you are eligible for the government supported Screen for Life (SFL) or Chronic Disease Management Programme (CDMP).
