Understanding Stroke: Early Signs, Risk Factors & Prevention

A stroke is not the same as a heart attack. It occurs when blood flow to the brain is suddenly disrupted—either due to a blockage (ischaemic stroke) or a burst blood vessel (haemorrhagic stroke). Without oxygen and nutrients, brain cells begin to die within minutes, making stroke a medical emergency.

Stroke can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender. Depending on its severity, it may lead to temporary or permanent disability—and in some cases, can be life-threatening.

Recognising the Signs of Stroke

Early recognition can save lives. Common symptoms include:

  • Sudden dizziness or loss of balance
  • Numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body
  • Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
  • Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes

Use the FAST test to identify stroke quickly:

  • F – Face drooping
  • A – Arm weakness
  • S – Speech difficulty
  • T – Time to call emergency services immediately

Acting fast significantly improves the chances of recovery and reduces long-term complications.

Stroke Risk Factors You Should Not Ignore

Certain underlying medical conditions increase your risk of stroke, including:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol

Lifestyle factors also play a major role:

  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Diets high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Physical inactivity

The good news? Many of these risk factors are preventable and manageable with the right awareness and early intervention.

Take Charge of Your Health

Regular health screenings can help detect risk factors early—before they develop into serious conditions like stroke.

Speak with your doctor to find out if you are eligible for government-supported programmes such as:

  • Screen for Life (SFL)
