Hypertension
Hypertension
Blood pressure is the pressure exerted on the walls of your arteries by the pumping of blood. Therefore, high blood pressure also known as hypertension, means that when a person is at rest, his or her heart is overworked as the arteries have additional stress in their walls.
Hypertension can be mild, moderate or severe. It does not often show any symptoms but is a risk factor in many diseases such as heart attack, kidney failure, and stroke. Regular check-ups by a medical professional are thus important, and leading a healthy lifestyle can help treat and prevent hypertension.
Blood pressure is measured using an instrument called a sphygmomanometer (blood pressure monitor). The readings are a combination of two measurements: the systolic pressure is usually between 110 and 130mmHg, while the diastolic pressure is usually between 70 and 80mmHg. Consult your doctor if you need to have your blood pressure checked.
Speak with your doctor if you are eligible for the government supported Screen for Life (SFL) or Chronic Disease Management Programme (CDMP).
